Beginners' Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a partner?

We have found that most students come with their life partner and want to dance together as a couple. We therefore, ask people to change partners only occasionally as a teaching exercise in lead and follow. Unfortunately this means that singles are far better off finding someone to dance with and two girls often do come together taking turns at leading and following. If you register as a single seeking a dance partner we may be able to put you in touch with other single people who have also registered with us, but of course we cannot guarantee to find someone for you. On the other hand if enough singles living locally do register then we may be able to hold a singles only course of dancing tuition where you would change partners frequently and of course make new friends.

What kind of clothes should I wear to class?

Clothes should be loose and comfortable. Natural fibers or blends (cotton, rayon, silk, linen, microfiber) are preferable. Comfortable casual dress is recommended. Skirts and dresses should allow maximum leg movement forward, side, and back.

What kind of shoes do I need to wear?

You will need shoes with a non-marking fairly thin flexible sole. Smooth leather or soles with a slightly raised pattern are fine as are tennis shoes or lightweight trainers. Ladies, avoid smooth plastic soles as these can be treatcherously slippy on the dance floor, however we have found that cutting up an old pair of suede shoes to make your own soles or buying a set of suede soles from a shoe shop and sticking them onto the bottom of these type of shoes works quite well.

As you progress you will probably opt for specialist ballroom or latin american dance shoes which have a suede sole.

The soles of your shoes must be clean and free of all dirt and for that reason dance shoes should never be worn on the street.
Always carry your dance shoes to class - then put them on in the studio.

Can I pre-register for classes?

Yes. Pre-registration is highly recommended in order to minimize class time taken for administrative procedures and to ensure a place in the class.

How can I pay my tuition?

Tuition must be paid in full prior to the first class, cash, and personal cheques are accepted.

What is the absence policy on missed classes?

We have an accelerated curriculum with a sequential progression and we expect students to make every effort to attend. When an absence is unavoidable, 24-hour notification, prior to your scheduled class, is required.

Students falling behind through absences can book a 'make up' lesson at current private lesson rates.
