Charleston Line

I am indebted to Margaret Holiday who taught us this fun line dance during one of her excellent dance holidays. Again I have added a bit to the end (bars 9-16).

Music suggestions: Guaglione, Charleston (we have to slow down most of our versions of Charleston)
Tempo: Around 46 bars per minute

Abbreviations :

L = left, R = right, LF = left foot; RF = right foot; LH = left hand, RH = right hand, fwd = forward, , S = slow; Q = quick,
LOD = Line of dance, DC = diagonal centre, DW = diagonal wall, C = Centre, PP = Promenade Position.
The count in beats to the bar is given in brackets.

Start facing wall.

Charleston basic:
Tap RF in front of LF (1,2) S
Swinging R leg outwards place RF behind LF (3,4) S
Tap LF behind RF (2,2) S
Ronde LF in front of RF.(3,4) S
Repeat from start once. (bars 3-4)

Right foot digs: dig R heel to floor twice. (5,2,3,4) SS

Sailor's walk to L: RF behind and across body, LF side, RF fwd and across body. (6,2,3,4) QQS

Repeat on opposite foot: Left foot digs and sailors walk to R. (bars 7- 8)

Repleat Charleston basic twice but this time flick the RF fwd and across the body on beat 1 instead of tapping. SSSS, SSSS (bars 9-12)

Walk a Full Circle: 8 steps fwd (small steps, toes turned out (Charlie Chaplin style)) starting RF and ending LF. SSSSSSSS (bars 13-16)
On the final circle dancers like to use hands and arms to express the Charleston dance style by either waving arms in the air or holding the hands at chest level palms outwards and making small circles in opposite directions with each hand. Improvisation is key to a good time with this one!
